November 11, 2002 - An update from TK. . .

Hi guys,

I hope everyone's having a good Veterans day!

Sorry the testing for the patch is taking so long, but here's something you can play with while you wait...

As requested by some, I'm sending out the textures (in .bmp format) used by various weapons in the game. To get the game to recognize your custom "skin" for the weapons, you just need to drop your
custom texture into the Objects folder. That's it! :)

A couple of warnings...

First, because these are mapped onto every simple models, we don't have any .psd templates for them. Most of the textures should be easy to figure out (I hope!), but some might be a bit tricky without actually seeing the 3d model. If you need any help figuring out mapping on any particular weapon, please let us know and we can use texporter to create a blank template.

Second, some of the textures are re-used on multiple weapons, so please be careful whenmaking drastic changes... :) I hope the texture names are self-explanatory, if not, please let us know, we
can compile a list of which textures go with which weapons.

And finally, having multiple skins of single weapon... unfortunately, you can't have different skins on a weapon based on skin selection of the aircraft (as all weapons are pre-loaded by the game). So
there currently is no easy way to add "gray" tankand"camo" tank,for example. We might think of something clever to fix this in the future, but for now, you are limited to one skin per weapon (sorry!)

And looking forward, I'm currently going over the DecalsTutorial put together by DanW, and I hope to get that out in the next couple of days. We'll also be making the exporter plug-in for 3D Studio Max available shortly as well, so look for that later this week!

August 1, 2002- To help answer the ongoing question of a beta/pre-release or genuine flight sim. James Zimmerman has forwarded his reply from Strategy First, publishers of Strike Fighters, when asked about problems running the game and the validity of the release.

"Thanks for your email, we understand your frustration and hopefully we can clarify some things for you and your fellow gaming community.
The release of Strike Fighters that everyone is talking about is a limited commercial release, special only to one specific retailer, and is NOT a beta copy as some have insinuated. The release is a "basic version" that is targeted towards that specific retailer's audience. We admit that we have discovered more bugs than we thought and we are fixing them as quickly as we can in a patch that will be released in the coming weeks.
The next release which is the "fully featured" version will be released in September and will be distributed through the regular distribution channels. Those who have bought the "basic version" will be able to upgrade to the "fully featured" release for free. If they do not want to download that patch they will simply have to contact Strategy First at market@strategyfirst.com and we will gladly send them the upgrade on CD directly.
Strategy First supports TK and the developers in this project and we have not gone against what was discussed and agreed upon. The release is targeted to a specific retailer and its audience, while the next release is targeted to the rest of the distribution channel for a more hard-core gaming audience.
