The VMA-121 "Green Knights" squadron was originally formed in 1941 as the Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-121. It participated in the battle for Guadalcanal Island in the Pacific, and it holds the distinction of having destroyed more enemy aircraft than any other single Marine squadron. In 1951, the squadron was re-designated Attack Squadron VMA-121 and participated in the U.N. effort in Korea, performing close air support missions. The squadron is currently based at MCAS El Toro, California, and operates the A-4 Skyhawk.
